Knowing Practices: Historical Records of Military
and Martial Arts Knowledge in China and the World

The conference takes place on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, at the Seeburg on the Kiellinie in Kiel (Düsternbrooker Weg 2). A soft opening with lunch begins at 12:45, followed by the official programme from 13:30 to 18:30.

We warmly invite you to join this event on the day preceding the VCdH meeting as part of the Lecture Series China in the World. The conference, titled “Knowing Practices: Historical Records of Military and Martial Arts Knowledge in China and the World”, brings together scholars from different disciplines to explore historical practices and records of military and martial arts knowledge in China and beyond.

The presentations will examine the conceptualisation, documentation and dissemination of military and martial arts knowledge in China, Korea and Europe, while bringing together perspectives from Sinology/East Asian Studies, History and Sociology. Particular attention is given to the question of how “embodied knowledge” is transmitted, recorded and interpreted across time and cultural contexts.
